What these numbers mean

The Secchi depth measures how deep a white disk stays visible as it’s lowered into the lake — a higher number means clearer water. Phosphorus is the nutrient that fuels algae growth: lower is better. Chlorophyll-a tracks the algae currently in the water. Readings are taken by the volunteer monitoring program on scheduled sampling days; single readings can swing with weather, so trends over the season matter more than any one number.
